Ocean's 13 (2007)

This podcast episode delves into the cinematic experience of "Ocean's Thirteen," a film that exemplifies the blend of humor and heist intricacies inherent in the Ocean's franchise. The discussion opens with a nostalgic reflection on the late Bernie Mac, whose comedic prowess is sorely missed, prompting an exploration of the film's characters and their relationships. We analyze the film's narrative structure, noting its similarities to its predecessor, "Ocean's Eleven," while acknowledging the entertainment value that persists despite its lack of depth. The hosts engage in a spirited debate regarding the effectiveness of the film's heist mechanics and the chemistry among the ensemble cast, highlighting both the absurdity and the charm of the screenplay. Ultimately, we arrive at a consensus that, while "Ocean's Thirteen" may not be a critical masterpiece, it remains an enjoyable viewing experience that lightens the mood and entertains audiences.

Speaker A:

Brad Pitt movies.

Speaker A:

,:

Speaker A:

It was written by Brian Koppelman, David Levian and George Clayton Johnson.

Speaker A:

It was directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Speaker A:

Stars.

Speaker A:

Let me get ready here.

Speaker A:

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Elliot Gould, Ray Zifo, Al Pacino, Adam Lazaro White, Don Cheadle, Eddie Jemison, Shallow Kid, Casey Affleck, Bernie Mac, Scott Kong, Carl Reiner, Ellen Barkin more and more and more.

Speaker A:

And Eddie Izzard.

Speaker A:

It's about Danny Ocean, who rounds up the boys for a third heist after casino owner Willie bank double crosses one of the original 11.

Speaker A:

Reuben Tishkoff.

Speaker A:

Yeah, Matson, this was your choice, right?

Speaker B:

Oh, man, what a freaking great movie.

Speaker B:

People, people, people.

Speaker B:

When we talk about movies that I watch every so often, which as we know is a rarity, the Ocean's movies are right there towards the top.

Speaker B:

Number 12.

Speaker B:

Or number 12.

Speaker B:

The second one I remember watching when I had seen 11 and I watched 12 and I was more confused.

Speaker B:

I was like, what is happening?

Speaker B:

This is like.

Speaker B:

Because the ending and the whole egg thing now when I'm older and having watched it, I appreciate it a lot more.

Speaker B:

It's more witty humor than the other two and it connects really well to number three and such.

Speaker B:

But man, to me.

Speaker B:

Ocean's Thirteen is number 11.

Speaker B:

Just on some stage steroids.

Speaker B:

And they knew they had a good formula.

Speaker B:

They deviated in 12.

Speaker B:

I was like, yeah, can we just, can we just go back to Vegas?

Speaker B:

Can we just do best and let's just, let's just dick another casino owner.

Speaker B:

And getting Terry Benedict in on the act.

Speaker B:

I'm like, damn enemy to Frenemy baby.

Speaker B:

Like, let's just, let's let's go.

Speaker B:

There's so many characters from the like Mormon, not Mormon twins to Basil to like, I'm.

Speaker B:

I mean, I could just.

Speaker B:

Oh, just all the, the synergy.

Speaker B:

The Oprah Winfrey scene.

Speaker B:

Like, like, it's just to the five diamond guy that you're just like, poor, poor guy.

Speaker B:

Like just, just getting dicked and then makes the money.

Speaker C:

Like he gets to Susan B. Anthony at the airport.

Speaker B:

I know.

Speaker B:

I, I just like all like the, the, to the, the guy always.

Speaker B:

He's the name.

Speaker B:

I do forget the.

Speaker B:

He does all the tech stuff, but he's like.

Speaker B:

He kind of looks like a mouse and he's always unconfident about what he does.

Speaker B:

And everybody just has their part and they play it, knows they play it well.

Speaker B:

The nose talks so like, you know, like everybody's got their thing and I just, I just love it.

Speaker B:

This movie to me is a lot of bits that are sewn together with the.

Speaker B:

A loosely based like reasoning at the end that they're working towards.

Speaker B:

But man, you just can't help but love it.

Speaker B:

Like, I love this movie.

Speaker B:

Just feel good.

Speaker B:

You're like, damn, I wanna let me be a part of a crew.

Speaker B:

Like, let's do this.

Speaker B:

They just make it feel believable.

Speaker B:

It also makes robbing a casino look enjoyable.

Speaker B:

And like, like.

Speaker C:

Sure.

Speaker B:

And like, yeah, we wanted to suspension, like, sure.

Speaker B:

Some of the hardest places to probably rob in the world.

Speaker B:

Anybody likes their money, casinos.

Speaker B:

I just like the movie.

Speaker B:

Just makes me feel good.

Speaker B:

And it's really well acted.

Speaker B:

There's just good chemistry.

Speaker B:

It's a fun subject.

Speaker B:

And I thought they did it better than when they did it before and happy to have watched it.

Speaker A:

Yeah, this movie is.

Speaker A:

It's quite the conundrum for me because I do enjoy it because of the familiarity of it.

Speaker A:

The actors that are in it, the characters are funny, the story's fun, it's entertaining.

Speaker A:

I do struggle with it from a certain perspective in that it's not a very good movie.

Speaker A:

Meaning it's just Ocean's Eleven on steroids.

Speaker A:

And so for me, like, I was like, when we.

Speaker A:

And We've done Ocean's Eleven, right?

Speaker A:

And Ocean's Eleven is one of my favorite movies, both the original and the updated, newer version.

Speaker A:

I say newer meaning it had this cast of characters.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Instead of the old cast of characters.

Speaker A:

However, my problem, and this is a me thing, because I realized that I'm going against the grain here by saying that by the time we got to Oceans 13, I was like, okay, it's kind of like Transformers 5, right?

Speaker A:

Like, it's like, yes, it's gonna make money because of who's in it and what it is.

Speaker A:

And it's interesting, but do we really need it?

Speaker B:

I think a better comparison is what's the one where.

Speaker B:

With Mike Tyson and the tiger.

Speaker A:

Oh, yeah, exactly.

Speaker A:

It's the same thing.

Speaker A:

Hangover.

Speaker B:

Yeah, it's.

Speaker B:

It.

Speaker B:

And I can get that to an extent.

Speaker B:

I just know why this hits my.

Speaker B:

Like, per.

Speaker B:

I know I'm.

Speaker B:

I should just say 11 is better, but I just.

Speaker B:

I liked 11 so much.

Speaker B:

I. I still like 13.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And don't get me wrong, like, this is where the conundrum comes in, right?

Speaker A:

Like, I can set myself aside and go, I don't think this is a great movie because it's just a repeat with a little bit of extra stuff, which literally, the name implies, Right.

Speaker A:

Every time they add a new person, the number goes up and then.

Speaker A:

But at the same time, it's enjoyable.

Speaker A:

Do I have fun watching it?

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

The only thing that really gets me twerked in this movie, and this is all three of them, is Don Cheadle's British accent is horrid.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Like, his.

Speaker A:

It's awful and it drives me crazy.

Speaker A:

However, it's an enjoyable movie.

Speaker A:

It's funny, it's in.

Speaker A:

It's.

Speaker A:

It's fun.

Speaker A:

Like, I laugh, I giggle, have a good time.

Speaker A:

But that.

Speaker A:

That objective part of me goes that it's just.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it is what it is.

Speaker A:

But I. I'm not saying it's a.

Speaker A:

It's not fun.

Speaker A:

I'm just saying from a film perspective, it's.

Speaker A:

It's just a repeat, which is okay because it works in what it's trying to do, which was have a good time, bring back a huge cast of characters that only come together because George Clooney makes it happen.

Speaker A:

And then, yeah, you.

Speaker A:

You make money, which is the key.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So, yeah, there's my early on synopsis.

Speaker A:

Then we can talk about it.

Speaker A:

Alec, what about you, buddy?

Speaker C:

I'm right in your camp.

Speaker C:

Except I would extend it that I don't think the Ocean's Movies.

Speaker C:

Any of them are good movies.

Speaker C:

But there's two things that they do that is a master class, and it makes them enjoyable watches.

Speaker C:

And the first one is the character relationships.

Speaker C:

Master.

Speaker C:

You touched on this a little bit.

Speaker C:

But the relationships of the different characters have.

Speaker C:

Are what make this movie.

Speaker C:

Anytime you got Scott Khan and Casey Affleck, who are two actors who shouldn't be put together at any point in time.

Speaker A:

Fair.

Speaker C:

But you're doing.

Speaker C:

They're amazing.

Speaker C:

Then you have, you know, Matt Damon with pretty much anybody in this film, and it's fantastic.

Speaker C:

George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Speaker C:

I mean, that's what that's built around.

Speaker C:

So the character relationships are what make it an enjoyable watch.

Speaker C:

And then the second thing is these movies do a fantastic job about telling you exactly how they're gonna pull off the heist.

Speaker A:

Mm.

Speaker C:

But in a way that you have no idea how the pieces go together.

Speaker C:

They tell you pretty much start to finish what they're gonna do, but it's in little throwaway lines or off to the side or, you know, there's no actual.

Speaker C:

Sit down and plan it out.

Speaker C:

Because you have these character relationships going back and forth with Brad Pitt and George Clooney the most, where they just finish each other's sentences, but not really.

Speaker C:

They just.

Speaker C:

Huh.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And it.

Speaker C:

And then when it all comes together and wraps up, it's such a beautiful painting of the heist.

Speaker C:

And you can go back and see where everything that's happening.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker C:

Like, the one in this one that gets me all the time is, you know, having freaking Al Pacino walk down and take the magnetron into.

Speaker C:

Into Greco.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker B:

This.

Speaker C:

This is the culmination of, like, seven separate different lines that have no connection whatsoever.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But it all comes together in this moment of pure brilliance to where, you know, Willie bank is the object that's shutting us down.

Speaker B:

Sir.

Speaker B:

Again, it's the system.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So by the.

Speaker C:

When you get to the payoff, it's just so beautifully woven together.

Speaker C:

That doesn't matter if this is a good movie or not a good movie, because it's a master class in how to wrap up a story.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I say the.

Speaker B:

The phrase that.

Speaker B:

Come on 11.

Speaker B:

I probably say.

Speaker B:

I know I say it a lot.

Speaker B:

And when we game.

Speaker B:

Sometimes it comes directly from this movie.

Speaker B:

Because I love that part when they're like.

Speaker B:

And they're like, did you hit him?

Speaker A:

Hit him harder.

Speaker B:

Give these people a damn earthquake to get out here.

Speaker B:

Like, this is just.

Speaker B:

I mean, who would want to go at that point?

Speaker B:

You're like, I always think of the scene.

Speaker B:

It's the one like, blackjack dealer and she's like, dealing.

Speaker B:

You can see her facial expression, because you could.

Speaker B:

She's like, what is going on?

Speaker B:

Like, you know, when you work from, like, it's all algorithms and everything.

Speaker B:

It's.

Speaker B:

You win.

Speaker B:

You win when they.

Speaker B:

They want you to, because you got to win enough.

Speaker B:

So doofuses keep coming to play, but, yeah, who's gonna leave that building?

Speaker B:

You're like, bro, I'm up.

Speaker B:

Like, and I love that they actually did, like, they put the graphic up and like, kind of take you out of the movie and make it look like a video game for a second.

Speaker B:

But they.

Speaker B:

They really drive the point home.

Speaker B:

And to tack into what Alex said once.

Speaker B:

I love this movie as all of them, but this.

Speaker B:

I mean, it's just kind of continuation when and how they use music in these movies.

Speaker B:

This movie, it.

Speaker B:

They got that down.

Speaker B:

They had that format because we just did a movie before where they didn't use music.

Speaker B:

And it was perfect.

Speaker B:

This movie is like a masterclass, in my opinion, of a well timed montage with music and, like, driving the story forward.

Speaker B:

I like it.

Speaker B:

Like, everything I can think of, it's playing in my head right now.

Speaker B:

I can't do that one as well on air.

Speaker B:

Like, you know, I love to do that, but it's there.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Or like the one where I like.

Speaker A:

Peter Gunn.

Speaker B:

They do such a good job with that.

Speaker A:

Yeah, no, I. I think, like, there's some really great dialogue too in these movies that keep you laughing and having a good time.

Speaker A:

Like, trying to think of the.

Speaker A:

The line like, that Clooney hits what's his face.

Speaker A:

So he's like, do you think he'll actually fall for that?

Speaker A:

Like, you did.

Speaker A:

Like, it just like.

Speaker A:

Like the look on his face.

Speaker A:

Like, you know, it's just like.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Like, I love that.

Speaker A:

Like, there's certain moments in these movies, all of them, but this one for sure.

Speaker B:

Or the end where, like, see when I see you.

Speaker B:

And then.

Speaker B:

Yeah, they're like, look at each other.

Speaker B:

And, you know, they're thinking like, this mother effort.

Speaker B:

Like somebody now.

Speaker B:

Like, all right.

Speaker C:

Like, yeah.

Speaker A:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker A:

And I think really good.

Speaker A:

Or like the Shut it down.

Speaker A:

It's.

Speaker C:

Do I sound like I'm laughing, sweetheart?

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

Like, and I. I think I said this back when we did Ocean's Eleven and we compared it to, like.

Speaker A:

Like, I think this movie, the Scott Khan steals all these movies to me.

Speaker A:

Like.

Speaker A:

Like just some of the.

Speaker A:

That he says and does, like, is just Hysterical.

Speaker A:

And he's so random.

Speaker A:

And I will say, as much as I love the twins, they.

Speaker A:

They have my least favorite storyline in this movie.

Speaker A:

Like, because I'm like, I feel like the, the stupid manufacturing place plant.

Speaker A:

Like that whole storyline is so unnecessary to me.

Speaker A:

Although I get it because it's these two characters, right?

Speaker A:

They can't help themselves.

Speaker A:

But at the same time, like, I'm just like, such a waste of time.

Speaker B:

I like them when they're.

Speaker B:

They with the five star diamond guy though, when they.

Speaker A:

They're back your things.

Speaker C:

Well, I love that because Scott Khan has even turned away.

Speaker C:

Yeah, he's already dealt with them.

Speaker C:

So he's just standing with his back to him, not paying any attention, but yelling at him over his shoulder.

Speaker B:

Thanks.

Speaker A:

It's hilarious.

Speaker A:

Well, and I love the part too, like, where Casey, I feel like it's the one dude's brother and he's like, hang in there.

Speaker A:

Whatever.

Speaker A:

Hang tough.

Speaker A:

Like that.

Speaker A:

That's funny.

Speaker B:

Jay, have you not referenced the part that you should have a lot of understanding with the, the car sales apart with Frank?

Speaker B:

I'.

Speaker B:

That's, that's a JJ scene through and through right there.

Speaker B:

For those that didn't know, Jay used to sell cars.

Speaker A:

It's true.

Speaker A:

I did.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

No, I, I think there's the other thing that this movies, all these movies kill me is Bernie Mac.

Speaker A:

Man, I wish Bernie Mac was still around.

Speaker A:

That's one of the funniest men alive.

Speaker A:

Like when he's pitching the dominoes.

Speaker B:

Oh, he's like, what you need us to do?

Speaker B:

I need you to hike up your skirt two weeks.

Speaker A:

Bernie Mac is one of the greatest comedians of all time.

Speaker A:

And like, his character in these movies is just.

Speaker B:

Funny.

Speaker B:

So you're like, okay, all right.

Speaker B:

At least you just.

Speaker B:

It's Vegas, baby.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it's so good.

Speaker A:

Like, I just.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I love Bernie Mac so much.

Speaker A:

But yeah, like these.

Speaker A:

I don't know, I think I find myself in 12 and 13, like having moments where I'm watching it and I go, okay, like, yeah, I'm gonna keep watching.

Speaker A:

And yeah, it's funny, but can you not smack me in the face with the ridiculous?

Speaker A:

Like the whole.

Speaker A:

When they pull in Terry Benedict and you knew it was coming back in the day when you had like the, the previews and you see that they were.

Speaker A:

He's 13, right?

Speaker A:

So it's like, okay.

Speaker A:

But at the same time, like, there's certain parts where I'm like, oh, God, you're so heavy handed.

Speaker A:

But that's the, the good part yet.

Speaker A:

The flip side of that is that they don't shy away from the fact that they're doing that.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Like, they're not.

Speaker A:

They know what they're doing, and they're doing it on purpose.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And I.

Speaker A:

Even though I go, you like, I still go, okay, it's funny.

Speaker A:

It's a good movie.

Speaker A:

But I just, like, I don't know.

Speaker A:

I. I look back at how good the first one was, and so I'm like, okay, I know why they just kind of rebuilt it.

Speaker A:

But I just, like.

Speaker B:

Because I got away from the number 12.

Speaker B:

Like, it's better than having just watched it.

Speaker B:

I watched all of them actually within, like, just literally past two weeks.

Speaker B:

And it's better than what I remember it being, because I didn't it, like, a while back.

Speaker B:

But the whole Julie Roberts scene in that one just kills me when she's literally playing herself.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then Bruce Willis shows up.

Speaker B:

I was like, all right, they had that down.

Speaker B:

That was.

Speaker B:

That was on lock.

Speaker B:

But the rest of it.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

But then they were like, I think we got to go back to the formula.

Speaker B:

And you know why?

Speaker B:

Because it was a great movie.

Speaker B:

They had it, and they did a lot of that.

Speaker B:

It's just one of those where it's like, I mean, did you have.

Speaker B:

Did they have to make it again?

Speaker B:

Probably not, but, you know, yeah, I'd rather them.

Speaker B:

This one was a much better.

Speaker B:

Let's continue this on.

Speaker B:

Than a lot of the movies that got two or three.

Speaker A:

But, like, all right, like, oh, for sure.

Speaker A:

Like, I mean, I think there's enough entertainment value just in the.

Speaker A:

The story itself that it works right.

Speaker A:

And it makes making the movie.

Speaker A:

I actually don't mind 12, except for the weird father daughter thing.

Speaker A:

Like, that part gets weird to me and distracts from the rest of what's going on and what makes these movies fun.

Speaker A:

So I know why they got back to, like, this formula.

Speaker A:

I do laugh early on at the tongue in cheek.

Speaker A:

Like, it's not their fight.

Speaker A:

Because, like, the two actresses that they're like, we're good.

Speaker A:

Like, we don't want to be in this one.

Speaker A:

Because otherwise you're like Ocean's 27 if you have everybody in it.

Speaker A:

But I did find that part, like, really funny early on.

Speaker A:

Like, you have to address the fact that Julia Roberts and what's her Face.

Speaker A:

Gosh dang it.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Catherine Zeta Jones isn't in it.

Speaker A:

So it's like, yeah, just leave it alone.

Speaker A:

It's not their fight.

Speaker A:

Go away.

Speaker A:

This is why they're not here.

Speaker A:

But Yeah, I mean, ultimately, I.

Speaker A:

This is a. I don't know.

Speaker A:

This is such, like, I said, such a conundrum for me because, like, my critical brain wants to be like, this movie's terrible.

Speaker A:

But, like, my fun movie brain is like, this movie's hysterical, and there's some really great parts to it, no matter the fact that we're recycling a lot of the same jokes and a lot of the same things and things like that.

Speaker A:

But I do love the inclusion of this poor bastard that gets, like, mites and then rash and then, like, shitty food that makes him sick.

Speaker A:

And, like, dude, I don't care if you want a 11 million or not.

Speaker A:

Like, in the moment.

Speaker A:

I don't think it was worth it.

Speaker B:

That's one of the things.

Speaker B:

Was it worth it?

Speaker B:

Like, he got, like, dude, it got ugly for him.

Speaker A:

Well, that.

Speaker C:

That's also, like, the thing that gets me is all the just throwaway lines.

Speaker C:

Because something that is so funny is while they're talking about what they're gonna do to him.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Like, Saul, who's the oldest in there, is, like, wouldn't do it for 10 million, do it for 11 million.

Speaker C:

And so they end up giving him 11 million.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

Good.

Speaker C:

And so it just shows that the number is completely arbitrary.

Speaker C:

They don't care.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And it's just a throwaway thing.

Speaker C:

Like, oh, okay, well, Saul said he'd do it for 11, so.

Speaker A:

Saul.

Speaker C:

Saul's the old guy.

Speaker C:

Makes sense.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Saul's one that's got to go through all the weird every movie.

Speaker A:

Like, he's the one that would know what it's worth and not worth.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I like, too, that they take care of.

Speaker A:

Like, they're only after one guy, usually one or two people.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And then the rest are like, we are sorry that we had to use you, but we'll make it better.

Speaker A:

And then I will say that Matt Damon really, like, his character Linus cracks me up in all three of them.

Speaker A:

But in this one, like, he's.

Speaker A:

That.

Speaker A:

This is his movie.

Speaker A:

In my opinion, when it comes to that trio at the top of the list of this cast, like, he finally, like, comes, like, the whole.

Speaker A:

In.

Speaker A:

In the elevator with his dad, like, just cracks my up.

Speaker A:

They're talking about the nose as he hands it back to him, how it's like, this.

Speaker A:

Not just a prop, but it's become a character and it was necessary.

Speaker A:

Like, just those silly throat.

Speaker A:

And I'm not usually a fan of, like, throwaway lines, but, like, that one, that whole conversation as they're walking out on the roof just kills me.

Speaker A:

So, yeah, good stuff.

Speaker A:

I like it.

Speaker B:

I'm with you, dude.

Speaker A:

But I don't know.

Speaker A:

Like, the other thing that makes me laugh is as we're sitting here talking about, I'm like, what else can I talk about with Ocean's 13?

Speaker A:

Which then tells me, like.

Speaker A:

And I.

Speaker A:

It hurts that we're just coming right off of Seven, which has, like, more depth than the Mariana Trench at this point, whereas this movie has zero depth.

Speaker A:

Like, it goes long, but it doesn't.

Speaker A:

Has no depth whatsoever.

Speaker A:

And so I'm like, what do we even talk about besides the funny lines and the goofy scenes with the twins or with Linus or, you know, the fact that Clooney and freaking Pit are always calm and collected and just talking through in their weird con man way, but there's just not a lot of depth to the movie.

Speaker A:

You know what I mean?

Speaker A:

There's, like.

Speaker A:

It is what it is, and it's funny and it's entertaining, but that's about all you get.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So that's fair.

Speaker B:

I don't think there's.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, it's enjoyable.

Speaker B:

Go.

Speaker B:

If you haven't seen it, watch the others.

Speaker B:

But you'll feel good.

Speaker B:

It's.

Speaker B:

It's a good one to watch after watching Seven.

Speaker B:

Say that.

Speaker A:

Fair.

Speaker A:

I mean, that.

Speaker A:

That.

Speaker A:

That is fair.

Speaker A:

I'll give you that.

Speaker A:

I will say juxtaposition.

Speaker C:

I think they could have done a better job.

Speaker C:

I don't know how to really describe it because, you know, they're supposed to be this crack crew, right?

Speaker C:

And you see that with the jobs they pull through all three movies, but then they make some boneheaded decisions.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker C:

Like the factories down in Mexico.

Speaker C:

Out of everybody on the crew, who are you sending?

Speaker C:

You're sending Turkish.

Speaker C:

Like, you're saying Scott Khan down there.

Speaker C:

You know, that it's not gonna be good.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

You know, versus.

Speaker C:

Matt Damon's always the guy who has to, you know, play.

Speaker C:

Play a character.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

He's.

Speaker C:

He poses as the Nevada Gaming Commission in the first one.

Speaker C:

Or he's.

Speaker C:

He's always the guy who's like, the official play type of a person.

Speaker C:

It's like, that's.

Speaker C:

That's the wrong move.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And so it's every.

Speaker C:

It's like every move they make or in a way is like, the wrong one and geared towards getting the best response or the most enjoyable response pretty much for the audience.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And so I.

Speaker B:

It's.

Speaker C:

It's weird one, because I think you could do a better job of just setting it up.

Speaker C:

Even if it was just like having Scott Khan be like, I'll go to Mexico.

Speaker C:

Because he always volunteers for stuff and they never pick him.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker C:

They always.

Speaker C:

So have him be like, I'll go to Mexico and just ignore him and try and figure it out, or have something along those ways so you can play it out a little bit better.

Speaker C:

Because it's like, hey, you got to go to Mexico and help your brother out.

Speaker C:

It's like, not going to end well.

Speaker A:

Yeah, they're going to end up throwing rocks over a fence.

Speaker C:

We gotta break management.

Speaker C:

They gotta stop treating us like this way.

Speaker A:

It's great.

Speaker A:

It's great.

Speaker A:

I. I will say to kind of your point, though, on the flip side of it, like, that's part of the.

Speaker A:

What's the word I'm looking for?

Speaker A:

Like, the.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

It's part of the fun, maybe of like, they're like, why would you do that again?

Speaker A:

You know, that's not gonna end well.

Speaker A:

But then at the end, it always feels like, well, it's exactly how it should have been and what they planned it for it to be.

Speaker A:

But, you know, you're watching this go through all the weird.

Speaker A:

You're like.

Speaker A:

It's like in the first one, when the emp.

Speaker A:

And he's like, we're nipped or whatever.

Speaker A:

He's just this terrible accent.

Speaker A:

Like, what?

Speaker A:

And he's got to go through 10 different ways of saying, we're purple.

Speaker A:

Yeah, that's where we're.

Speaker B:

Barney.

Speaker A:

Oh, God.

Speaker A:

Trouble.

Speaker A:

Trouble.

Speaker A:

His accent's horrid.

Speaker A:

Anyway.

Speaker A:

Well, like, yeah, so, I mean, it's part of, like, the.

Speaker A:

The cuteness of the film is like, you know, they're gonna screw everything up, but still have it come out on top and it all work out and seem like they planned it and look like these geniuses.

Speaker A:

But, yeah, interesting film.

Speaker A:

Should we rate it and have it maybe be one of the shortest ratings we've ever done?

Speaker B:

I don't know what more there is.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

Like, what are we gonna give it?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I feel like I'm Matt Damoning this review at this point.

Speaker A:

Like, just talking about.

Speaker A:

For the sake of talking about it.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker A:

All right, Matson, it's your movie.

Speaker B:

I'm gonna give it a three.

Speaker B:

Oh, I'm all invisible.

Speaker B:

Let me come back here.

Speaker B:

For our YouTube listeners, I had the blurry function on.

Speaker B:

I'm gonna give it a three.

Speaker B:

I think if I can't remember what I rated Ocean's 11.

Speaker B:

I probably gave that, like, a four and a half or a five or something like that.

Speaker B:

This movie is really fun.

Speaker B:

It's enjoyable.

Speaker B:

I like watching this movie.

Speaker B:

I've seen it a good amount.

Speaker B:

But if I had to pick between 11 and 13, I. I'm going 11.

Speaker B:

But this feels like a continuation for me.

Speaker B:

It's like they just decided, I don't know, two years later that they needed to run another heist and they did it.

Speaker B:

Happy to have watched it.

Speaker B:

Glad it was different than 12.

Speaker B:

Like I said, if you just watch 7 and you listen to us and you are gonna watch this movie, your spirits will be lifted.

Speaker B:

So you can thank us for that.

Speaker B:

I just love the synergy, love the music, love the scenery.

Speaker B:

I love Vegas.

Speaker B:

I, I lived there for a couple years.

Speaker B:

I love going back.

Speaker B:

I love the food, the vibe.

Speaker B:

I think it's a fun town and I think they do a good job showing that off.

Speaker B:

I'm sure Vegas was happy that they made these movies because I'd be curious.

Speaker B:

I mean, people are going anyways, but it made it look good.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I'm sure there's always an.

Speaker A:

There was always an influx after one of these movies.

Speaker A:

Good grief.

Speaker A:

I'm gonna give this movie A3 as well.

Speaker A:

It's fun, it's entertaining from like a film making perspective.

Speaker A:

Is it a good movie?

Speaker A:

No, but it's entertaining and it's fun and you'll find enjoyment out of it.

Speaker A:

Unless you're a soulless person that just doesn't enjoy funny one liners and silliness and like that, you know?

Speaker A:

So I mean, and I think back on I.

Speaker A:

The, the other problem that this movie will always have with me is the comparison tool.

Speaker A:

Because I think Ocean's Eleven is top notch.

Speaker A:

It's really cool.

Speaker A:

Both versions.

Speaker A:

Love them.

Speaker A:

And if you haven't listened to our episode, go listen to our episode of Ocean's Eleven versus the Italian Job.

Speaker A:

Whole different crew.

Speaker A:

That was when Al, or that was before Alec joined us.

Speaker A:

That was back when Javier had one of the greatest lines comparing the two.

Speaker A:

He's like, talk about Terry Benedict.

Speaker A:

He's like, man, the villains are a big thing.

Speaker A:

He's like, you got a guy, Terry Benedict, that just sounds.

Speaker A:

He goes.

Speaker A:

And then you got Steve.

Speaker A:

But anyway, go check that episode out.

Speaker A:

But yeah, Ocean 13.

Speaker A:

It's fun, it's enjoyable.

Speaker A:

Give it a three.

Speaker A:

Can't go wrong.

Speaker A:

Maybe not the most right decision you'll ever make, but you can't go wrong.

Speaker A:

So there it is for me.

Speaker C:

Alec, I have an opportunity.

Speaker C:

I'm gonna take it.

Speaker C:

I'm going to take Matson's man of the people crown.

Speaker C:

I'm going to bring it back to me and I'm going to give it three and a half.

Speaker C:

I.

Speaker C:

It's not a good movie, critically speaking, in any way, shape or form.

Speaker C:

Movie making, it is surface level, like we talked about.

Speaker C:

But the.

Speaker C:

The two things that I talked about, I think they do really well.

Speaker C:

I don't know if I can easily think of a movie that does them better, where you have this relationship building or the relationship between characters just so seamless, so smooth, and then on top of that, telling you exactly how they're gonna finish off the movie.

Speaker C:

But there's no way for you to put the pieces together because of how convoluted this is.

Speaker C:

But three and a half, these are always just a fun watch.

Speaker C:

So I've never been in a point where someone's like, hey, we should watch Ocean's Eleven.

Speaker C:

I'm like, now we should.

Speaker C:

Or Ocean thirteen.

Speaker C:

Like, we really shouldn't.

Speaker C:

And so, yeah, I'll give it three and a half and I'll become the new man of the people.

Speaker A:

There you go.

Speaker B:

I gotta say, I'm surprised that you outrated me on this movie.

Speaker B:

I was very much one of the more probably on it.

Speaker B:

I mean, I have to say it probably, if it's hard to say it's the most unexpected rating you've given.

Speaker B:

That's probably not true, but certainly top 10, probably top 5.

Speaker B:

I was thinking, not expecting that at all.

Speaker B:

Feel like I need to break this movie higher now because I'm like, wow, didn't see that coming.

Speaker A:

I gotta jump on that bandwagon too, because I was seriously, like back and forth between three and three and a half.

Speaker A:

And I was like, ah, do I really want to be the highest rated on this?

Speaker A:

Son of a. I was like, I don't know.

Speaker A:

So I was like, I really think a 3 is nice and level for me.

Speaker A:

So I pleasantly surprised you rated this three and a half out of character based on how we know you.

Speaker A:

But I like it.

Speaker A:

I like it.

Speaker A:

It's a welcome change.

Speaker B:

And with that, he just did it for giggles.

Speaker A:

That could be true.

Speaker A:

He wanted to steal that title, which I respect.

Speaker A:

It was good.

Speaker A:

It was a good use of your.

Speaker A:

Your platform to take advantage, so.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker A:

Well done.

Speaker C:

I like going last on occasion.

Speaker A:

There you go.

Speaker A:

And with that, Alec, tell everybody where they can find us when they're not listed as be weird.

Speaker C:

Oh, wait, yeah, that's not really.

Speaker C:

That's a terrible idea.

Speaker C:

But for your viewing pleasure, Mondays we release episodes, so watch us on YouTube at what's Our verdict?

Speaker C:

Reviews.

Speaker C:

I believe we chase the YouTube channel or just whatsoever.

Speaker C:

Type it in.

Speaker C:

Once you see the three Stooges, that is us for getting involved in the voting process.

Speaker C:

Unfortunately this is September week two.

Speaker C:

So September movies are closed with Brad Pitt, but we should have another vote up and running for future months.

Speaker C:

Patreon is a place to get involved with the voting.

Speaker C:

So find us there at what's our verdictreviews?

Speaker C:

Completely free to vote.

Speaker C:

Drop a vote in.

Speaker C:

It really means a lot to us when our movies are picked.

Speaker C:

So the way that we kind of do the voting process is category.

Speaker C:

Right now we're on a bit of an actor actress kick and then we all select a couple movies that we want to torture the others with.

Speaker C:

From there, you guys get to vote and whoever wins gets major bragging rights.

Speaker C:

I'm kind of annoyed because I got one pick this month, but that's best place to do it.

Speaker C:

Special thanks to our patrons.

Speaker C:

Is it Charles and Rich.

Speaker C:

You guys are amazing.

Speaker C:

Appreciate you both.

Speaker C:

And with that I will kick it back to the colossus of clout.

Speaker C:

The king of Crash.

Speaker C:

A jj.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I was kind of surprised.

Speaker A:

I thought I was gonna 3 for 3 again on this one.

Speaker A:

But no, we had a nice.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Between me and Matson.

Speaker A:

Two and two and then poor Alec.

Speaker A:

Unbelievable his one.

Speaker A:

But it was a good one.

Speaker B:

That is true.

Speaker A:

It's probably it.

Speaker A:

It arguably could be the highest total rated movie we watched this month for September.

Speaker C:

Well now.

Speaker C:

Yeah, now I'm just gonna tank everything to make sure it is.

Speaker A:

We'll see.

Speaker A:

There's still.

Speaker A:

There's still a couple of bangers.

Speaker C:

Lynch accepted.

Speaker A:

But yeah, there's.

Speaker A:

I. I think problem with my 2 is Matson will probably have some pacing issues with my 2, but that's okay with that.

Speaker A:

True.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it's.

Speaker A:

It's almost likely very true.

Speaker B:

I mean you do know me pretty well, so I feel pretty confident in that.

Speaker B:

Your synopsis if that's the case.

Speaker B:

Which is a little upsetting that you got to do that to me.

Speaker B:

But you know, what are we gonna do?

Speaker A:

I'm hoping it'll balance out one for sure.

Speaker A:

You'll have issues with pacing.

Speaker A:

The other one.

Speaker A:

I don't know the other one.

Speaker A:

There may be enough there to keep you going.

Speaker A:

Alec purchased.

Speaker A:

Man of the people.

Speaker A:

Swipe that with that.

Speaker A:

Look, we appreciate you tuning in as always and we'll catch you on the next one.

Speaker C:

Hasta la vista, baby.

Speaker A:

Cinematic out.
